28/12/2020: A walk into Peak Dale
We didn't sleep in late as we had an Ocado order between 6.30 and 7.30 am.
The forecast was for snow in the Peak and we could see that there indeed were modest accumulations at the Cat and Fiddle and at the Winking Man via their webcams.
Driving over, fog was more of an issue than snow, and it was only as we approached Tideswell that we saw a light dusting.
Today K worked in the main bedroom, taking out the 1970s Louvre fitted wardrobes which were rickety and held together by nails.
I cleaned the upper cupboards in the kitchen. They were a bit gunky and obviously very old.
Then around 1 pm we walked into the main part of Peak Dale. The footpath we took was closed by DCC and an alternative path that somebody had beaten was quite treacherous so we retraced our steps and walked along the road.
The first building we saw was the Great Rocks Social Club - a big building in good condition - but currently closed as we're in Tier 3 Covid restrictions. There was a well kept bowling green opposite with a pavilion and huge car park.
The main part of Peak Dale straddled along a single lane above Great Rocks Dale. The first houses look like 1950s or 1960s council houses.
The oldest part of the village surrounds a park. Strangely there was no obvious former pub. There are two churches - one derelict and the other being converted into a home.
A narrow street of terraced cottages lies at the southern end of the village with very low front doors.
We saw several people on our walk and they were all friendly.
As the village was coming to an end, we walked back to the Club and down back to our house.
Back at the house we cleaned up some outdoor furniture that had been left behind so we had something to temporarily sit and eat on.
We cleaned the outdoor paintwork and did more in the kitchen before heading off for the day.
